Light and Elegance

The elegance of the outer appearance of the Bremen Kunsthalle continues into the interior of the building. Especially the ceiling design conveys a pleasant atmosphere. The ellipse in the Turell room is an eye catcher. This element, like all other components, comes from the Emskirchen-based ceiling systems manufacturer Vogl Deckensysteme.

"The world of art is a world of dream", as the German author Ernst Raupach puts it. This artistic amalgamation is also reflected in the Bremen Kunsthalle. It is where masterpieces of 600 years of art history come together for an impressive rendezvous. Let's go on a tour from the outside to the inside.

The Bremen Kunsthalle was built in the era of classicism. At the end of the 19th century, it was re-shaped in the neo-renaissance style.

When the classicist building was about to burst at the seams, the historical edifice dated from 1849 received an expansion of two side wings realised by the Berlin architect group Hufnagel Pütz Rafaelian within a construction period of two years.

The massive building front is accentuated by four windows each on the left and on the right side both on the first and second floor which give the historic entrance gate situation its distinctive appearance. It is erected in so-called post-and-lintel construction. A striking feature is the extensive glazing in the area of the base and of the 2nd floor. Large, smoothly sanded artificial stone panels applied between the ground and first floor fuse into one with the rest of the sand stone facade.

Already the outer appearance suggests the enormous capacity of space. "The existing building complex (two basements, ground floor, mezzanine, first floor and attic) covers a floor space of 7,400 m² while the two expansion wings take up another 5,500 m²", say the architects.

Eye catcher: Elliptic Ceiling

The straight-lined style can also be found in the ceiling design of the Kunsthalle interior. It is a combination of acoustic ceilings and customised moulded elements. Walking through the exhibition rooms in the basement, on the ground and first floor, the visitor is impressed by the coved lighting and round and angular shapes. It serves not only as a source of light but seems to form an inseparable entity in connection with the ceiling. It presents itself in a 3D design, like for example a vaulted part with wall transition or an ellipse. These customised parts were produced by Vogl Deckensysteme, an Emskirchen-based manufacturer specialising in such requirements. The dry interior construction was in the hands of KAEFER Construction GmbH based in Bremen.

An elliptic ceiling in the form of a vault, and thus an absolute eye-catcher, expects the visitors in the so-called Turell room. Over an area of 80 sqm, quarter-circular, rounded, two-piece moulded elements come together to form a harmonious whole. It requires good fingertip feeling on behalf of the dry construction specialist to perfectly join the connections of the prefabricated moulded elements on site!

Just fold it, it holds!

VoglFalt-Fix was used a lot in this project to achieve clean, precise and uniform corner connections. This system allows corner connections of panel edges around cladding and moulded elements of plasterboard to be installed without any trouble, "because it permits the job to be done effectively and accurately in a very short time and provides perfectly finished edges", as product manager Benedikt Roos from Vogl Deckensysteme describes it. VoglFalt-Fix is a pre-cut plasterboard panel with one or more 90-degree V-grooves. This moulded element is provided with a special adhesive tape. Once the covering film is peeled off, the two limbs of the component are folded together. Applying gentle pressure is enough for the strip to hold. With this method of glueless bonding, priming and drying times are a thing of the past!

To achieve ideal room acoustics, the acoustic plaster VoglToptec Nano SF was applied to ceiling surfaces previously covered with acoustic plaster system panels. It bears the natureplus® quality label and is available in two variations: as VoglToptec Akustik Nano SF with a grain size of 0.5 mm creating a very fine surface finish. Or, if you want to add some colour to the picture, use VoglToptec Akustik Color which comes in nearly all RAL colours.

The dressed up Bremen Kunsthalle shines in new splendour and presents its visitors a beautiful ceiling design. Vogl ceiling systems turn buildings into absolute eye-catchers and add to their usefulness through form, colour and functionality.
