A well-rounded thing

Small and large circles made of fibreglass-reinforced moulded gypsum components in the ceiling are a true highlight of the Baader Food Processing Machinery new building in Lübeck. These dimmable LED rotundas were created by Peter List, a lighting designer from Hamburg. The moulded components of the VoglVariety product line are made by Vogl Deckensysteme.

In close cooperation, Vogl Deckensysteme and list lichtdesign accomplished the interior decoration of the Baader Food Processing Machinery company in the city of Lübeck which was newly constructed in 2016. Rounded fibreglass-reinforced gypsum rotundas with dimmable LED downlights and strips are true eye-catchers.

Olaf Thiele, head of sales of the Middle-Franconian ceiling manufacturer, emphasizes: "As a manufacturer of ceiling systems, we offer our customers a wide range of services. We set great store by supporting our customers at every stage of the project – from consulting through technical preparation to mounting instructions on the job site."

GRG – sturdy and easy to shape

The new VoglVariety product line was installed in the training room furnished with modular partition walls. The fibreglass-reinforced moulded gypsum components (GRG = Glass Reinforced Gypsum) boast high degree of strength and surface hardness. But there is more to it: due to its stability, the non-combustible material can assume virtually any geometric shape. "Because of its material properties, three-dimensional shapes and out-of-the-ordinary designs can be created," Benedikt Roos, product manager, explains.

The VoglVariety product line is classified as material class A1 of non-combustible materials, which makes it a prefect choice for indoor applications. The surface of these moulded components is smoothed already in the factory to make them ready for final finishing. If any joints appear between the moulded components during installation of gypsum modules, these are filled in a traditional manner with a gypsum filler and a joint reinforcement tape. "Depending on the desired surface quality, the filling compound can also be distributed over the surface. The module pieces for each project are custom-made and provided with fixing points, meaning that suspension in a conventional vernier system is the only step to be taken on site. This results in simplicity and extraordinary swiftness of installation," explains the product manager.

Rotundas with individual LED modules

"The training and meeting room measuring 200 m² can be partitioned into three sizes. The dimmable individual LED modules integrated into the rotundas serve as an indirect source of light. The strips of 35 cm in length were used for the small circles, and the strips of 50 cm in length were used for the large ones. Downlights were installed into the ceiling to provide an optimum lighting solution. "This direct lighting channels the brightness to the tables," explains Peter List. This makes the light circles not only ultimately eye-catching; due to this individually adaptable lighting concept, corporate evening events can also be held.

When considering the ceiling installation as a whole, it becomes obvious that a great deal of elaborate preparatory work was necessary. Cable routing, ventilation ductwork or installation of guiding rails for the walls are just some examples. "There is always a certain requirement in the rooms in terms of illuminance," says Peter List.

Fitting the light into these profiles is currently possible with the LED technology only. "Fluorescent tubes used to be installed in former times. In the course of the further LED development, light quality with a colour rendering index of 97 can be implemented just like during the light bulb age," says the lighting designer and adds: "If a profile fails, it will be simply replaced."

The moulded components made by Vogl Deckensysteme are virtually predestined to create an extraordinary spatial sensation. "The VoglVariety moulded components with the integrated LED strips help to create an impressive and pleasant atmosphere," sums up Roos. Small and large light circles accentuate the ambient atmosphere and impressively reflect ceiling design in form, colour and performance.
