This is sharp!

The tapering building harmonises with Ericusspitze. This is the place where the SPIEGEL Group has been situated since September 2011. The new light-flooded building at Hamburg's Hafenspitze is reminiscent of the Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius. The inside of this 13-floor building was equipped with acoustic ceilings made by the ceiling manufacturer Vogl Deckensysteme from Emskirchen. They offer a pleasant atmosphere.

Hamburg – Hanseatic city and gate to the world. The city upon the Elbe river radiates the typical northern German charm. It is not buttoned-up but cosmopolitan with a vein to singularity: Innumerable bridges characterise the cityscape. With Hafencity a new district is built upon the Elbe. Directly at its eastern entrance, on the so-called "Ericusspitze", the new 13-floor building of the SPIEGEL Group was constructed opposite the historical warehouse district. In order to resist the northern German climate, it has a storm-tide-safe base of red bricks which stabilises this magnificent glass building.

Communication, networking and openness characterise the modern media building; its skeleton is built from steel and concrete; a glass façade forms its envelope. The clear stylistic shape bears the handwriting of the Danish architect Henning Larsen, i.e. of the master of cool practicality who designed this impressive building. The construction time was three years.

The modern office complex comprises 30,000 m² floor space. It features the compliance with high standards as regards ecological sustainability. It is accentuated by floor-to-ceiling windows which allow much daylight to flow in. A well-balanced climate is ensured by a ventilated double-façade with integrated protection against the sun. Chilled floating ceilings installed in the office provide heating and cooling, enhance the indoor climate and use geothermal energy to air-condition the building which contributes to the low power demand and, hence, to environmental protection.

Ceiling Cases are the solution

The entire interior construction of the 13 floors plus atrium, except the staff restaurant, was performed by the Hamburg company KAEFER Construction GmbH. All offices were equipped with acoustic ceiling cases with 50 cm in vertical direction and one meter in horizontal direction. The 12/25 type square ceiling cases have a perforated area of 23.0%. The ceiling cases accommodate and hide the entire ventilation system, electric installation and building services.

The ceiling cases are factory-moulded elements with unperforated edges and a V-groove. The prefabricated framework with fixed lengths saved the dry construction contractor a lot of time during installation. After the ceiling cases were installed, Vogl Toptec acoustic plaster Nano white was applied. The grain size chosen was 0.5 mm. These types of plaster are preferably used for office buildings. Just where many people meet and noise reduction is essential! Who wants to add colour can choose VoglToptec Akustik Color which is available in almost all RAL colours.

VoglToptec and VoglFuge

The extraordinary atrium has bridges which give the interior lightness. These bridges were also treated with the acoustic plaster on the visible side at the bottom. The ceiling case shape in this area has an acoustic function which complies with the sound absorption class C. "There is a large range of different ceiling systems and sound absorption factors (αw) which allow an optimum room acoustic ceiling design. They are broken down in sound absorption classes A to E: E starts at 0.15, D at 0.55, C at 0.60, B at 0.80 and A at 0.90. In addition, the perforated area plays a big role which has an effect on acoustics. Conclusion: The higher this percentage is, the higher is usually the sound absorption rate," product manager Benedikt Roos of Vogl Deckensysteme says.

VoglFuge was used in addition to the VoglToptec acoustic plaster system. This is a joint technology which makes the finishing of joints child's play for the dry construction contractor. The delivery of the VoglFuge system kit contains everything the dry construction specialist needs for his work: such as, for example, a sponge, screws, tools and a detailed installation description. It is a great alternative to the joint systems hitherto known as this system allows quick and easy-to-use joint finishing without all the tedious filling work.

The dry construction specialist first mounts the single panels edge to edge onto a level ceiling framework. After installing the panels, he has to eliminate any discrepancies in height, for instance, by adjusting the Vogl perforated panel screws. The dry construction specialist can then spot-fill the screw heads in the joint area using Vogl screw head and repair filler. Any protruding plasterboard edges are simply removed with a sanding pad. The joint area is then slightly moistened with a sponge working in the direction of the joints, and Vogl liquid joint coating (ready-mix product) is applied with a lambskin roller. A very simple and efficient aid is put to use now: The VoglFuge strip is placed in the middle of the moist liquid joint coating with its rubberised side down and thus affixed to the joint. The two hours of drying time can be used to spot-fill the screw heads in the middle of the panels. All that is left to be done after the drying time is smoothing the joint surface with sanding paper, again working in direction of the joint. Intensive sanding is not necessary, and the result is impressive: an appealing surface image without any visible panel edges!

Vogl Deckensysteme not only has the appropriate ceilings and all exactly matched system components. These products rather enhance the value of the building through form, colour and performance and increase its usefulness sustainably.
